Recognizing the Current State of Osteoporosis Globally

With an increase in longevity and an aging population, osteoporosis is becoming a global epidemic.¹ Osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually, resulting in a fracture every three seconds around the world.^2,3 However, it is estimated that only one-third of vertebral fractures due to osteoporosis come to clinical attention and under-diagnosis of vertebral fracture is a worldwide problem.⁴

On World Osteoporosis Day, October 20, Amgen is calling attention to these alarming statistics and global unmet needs, further raising awareness of this serious disease. With more than 25 years of osteoporosis research experience, Amgen is addressing these challenges with urgency to help reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures.

Medicines are vital to helping reduce the risk of fractures in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis per the recent data presented at this year's American Society for Bone Mineral Research (ASBMR). By demonstrating substantial improvements across meaningful endpoints, Amgen hopes to deliver value to patients, payers, healthcare systems, and society.
